Angel Guzman, Eunice Perez, Melisa Corrales, German Godinez Salgado, Jessica Medel Rosales, Alan Caro, Uriel Peizer, and Pamela Bonilla-Batres - USHLI and the Untapped History of the Latinx Community
This presentation details the impact that the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute Conference (USHLI) in Chicago had on eight Central Washington University students. USHLI allowed these students to attend luncheons, workshops, forums that taught cultural & political Latinx issues. Students also attended networking events, connected with students from other universities around the country, and how to be interactive leaders. During this conference, students learned about leadership skills and the cultural & historical movements of the Latinx population in the United States. Conference keynote speakers included leader and activist, Dolores Huerta and CWU alumnus & Benton County District Attorney, the Honorable John M. Haroldson. These motivational speakers inspired emerging leaders, such as ourselves to become activists within the Latinx community and continue paving the way for the forthcoming generations.

Alejandro Alcantar, Sofia Castro-Loza (Graduate Student), Erandy Esquivel, Jaquelin Flores Marin, Daisy Hernandez-Hurtado, and Kiersten Kimminau - USHLI and the Future Latinx Leaders
This presentation will highlight the experience of six students of the twenty-five who were selected to attend the 37th Annual United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI) in Chicago, Illinois from February 14-17, 2019. This conference featured interactive workshops and prominent speakers such as political leaders, broadcasters, educators and business CEO’s. Through the pecha kucha format, the students will share their perspective and personal impact as Latinx students. Among the outcomes of the conference, the students were able to gain knowledge on community service, leadership roles, networking, resilience, and the value of Latinx representation in the students’ future careers. From campaigning for student body president to conservation efforts, the students are immediately applying their skills obtained from the conference at Central Washington University.

A group of students attended the 2019 United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI) Conference in Chicago. At this conference, students listened to and interacted with Latinx speakers. The speakers presented on behalf of their experiences as leaders within the fields of community organizing, politics, and other forms of service. At this four-day conference, there were workshops that emphasized the joys and difficulties of becoming leaders. These workshops focused on self-care, motivation when life gets challenging, as well as issues within the Latinx community. Students had the opportunity to network with student leaders from other universities. They exchanged impressions about workshops and the speakers, as well as reflections on how to apply information from the conference. This presentation will highlight students’ personal takeaways from the conference. Each attendee felt inspired by the speakers to become more active within their communities and the larger political atmosphere. Students were impacted by the stories of hardship and success from leaders such as Dolores Huerta, Beto O’Rourke, Juan Andrade, among others. Each student will share narratives of personal and professional growth with concrete examples of how they are applying what they learned at this conference.
